Best Coffee Shops & Brunch in Traverse City: The Local's Guide (2026)

Updated October 2026

It's no secret: we kinda love our coffee.

I host nine homes around Traverse City, and "where should we get coffee?" is the question I answer more than any other. So here it is, the full list: every coffee shop and brunch spot in town we actually send guests to, organized by where you'll be and what kind of morning you're after. Downtown on Front Street, the Village at Grand Traverse Commons, the drive-thrus and bakeries for mornings on the move, and the brunch places worth planning a day around. At the end, I'll point you to our area guides for mornings out in Leelanau and beyond.

Downtown Traverse City Coffee: Front Street & the Warehouse District

If you're staying anywhere near downtown, your coffee problem is having too many options within a five-minute walk. Front Street alone has a roaster, a bakery, a European-style café, and the longest-running coffee shop in Traverse City.

Mundos Roasting & Co.

Our favorite roaster in town, with three spaces to choose from

Location: 305 W Front St (downtown flagship), 720 W Front St (West), 1238 S Garfield Ave (HQ)

Hours: Monday-Saturday 8am-4pm at the 305 location (closed Sundays there)

Order this: The Honey Latte is a local benchmark. The Garfield HQ location makes excellent breakfast burritos.

The vibe: The 305 shop is bright, minimalist, plant-filled, and buzzing: expansive windows, Slayer espresso machines, house-made syrups including lavender-mint. Great for remote work, though it gets loud at peak hours.

Good to know: Mundos West has creekside picnic tables if you want somewhere quieter, and HQ on Garfield is the roomiest of the three. You really can't pick wrong.

Espresso Bay

Classic coffeehouse with on-site roasting since 2003

Location: 202 E Front St, downtown

Hours: Monday-Thursday 7am-6pm, Friday-Saturday 7am-7pm, Sunday 8am-5pm

Order this: Their Golden Espresso small-batch roast. They're also known for gelato in the afternoons.

The vibe: Traditional coffeehouse, cozy, slightly cluttered, unpretentious. The stone fireplace makes it especially nice in winter, and the second-floor seating overlooks Front Street for people-watching.

Good to know: Great central stop while walking Front Street, and the latest-open coffee option downtown.

Good Harbor Coffee & Bakery

TC's longest-running coffee shop (since 1991)

Location: 111 W Front St, downtown

Hours: Tuesday-Saturday 6:30am-12pm only

Order this: The scones: raspberry orange, lemon blueberry, or savory Swiss chive. They sell out fast.

The vibe: Tiny and no-frills with just four stools inside and small outdoor tables. This is a grab-and-go stop, not a workspace.

Good to know: Very limited hours and seating. Get there early if you want scones.

Outpost TC

European-inspired café on Front Street

Location: 108 E Front St, downtown

Hours: Historically Thursday-Monday 8am-2pm; check current hours, they have been adding days

Order this: Espresso and pastries in the morning; sandwiches, wine, and treats as the day goes on.

The vibe: Compact and continental. It feels more like a café you'd wander into on a city trip abroad than a typical TC coffee shop, which is exactly the point.

Good to know: A good pick when you want coffee and a glass of wine to be options at the same table.

Water Bearer Coffee

Art-forward café in the Warehouse MRKT

Location: 144 Hall St Suite 100, Warehouse District

Hours: Check current hours

Order this: Espresso drinks, fresh-made juices, smoothies, and small plates built around a local menu.

The vibe: Centered on good food and a welcoming community, with a full-wall mural by local artist Heather Spooner. The Warehouse District location puts you a short walk from downtown without the Front Street crowds.

Good to know: Pair it with a wander through the surrounding Warehouse District shops.

The Village at Grand Traverse Commons

The restored historic State Hospital west of downtown is its own little morning world: two coffee shops, two of the best brunch spots in the region (more on those below), and 480 acres of trails to walk it all off. We keep two condos inside historic Building 50 here, Historic Hearth for two and Spiral Sanctuary for up to six, and guests routinely tell me they never moved the car all weekend. Our Commons neighborhood guide covers the whole campus.

Higher Grounds Trading Co.

The original Traverse City roaster, B Corp-certified and fair-trade

Location: 806 Red Dr, Suite 150, Grand Traverse Commons

Hours: Daily 8am-3pm

Order this: The Fall in Love latte or Bay Chai. They roast on-site five days a week.

The vibe: Cozy and rustic with a big patio overlooking the Commons lawn. They take their direct-trade mission seriously, working with farms around the world to source beans ethically, and the space feels like a mountaineer's lodge because of it.

Good to know: Free hour-long roastery tours are available with registration, and it's the ideal basecamp before hiking the Commons trails or touring the labyrinth of shops.

Cuppa Joe

Locally owned classic, a TC fixture since 1999

Location: 1200 W Eleventh St (GT Commons), plus 1990 US-31 Suite F (Eastside) and a drive-thru at 1060 E Front St

Hours: Daily 8am-3pm at the Commons location

Order this: Roaster Jack coffee (roasted daily on-site) with Light of Day Organics tea options, plus smoothies and baked goods.

The vibe: The Commons location has pale pink walls, tall windows, and plenty of seating: settle in with a book or catch up with a friend, then go explore the Mercato shops.

Good to know: Three locations means one is usually on your way, and the East Front drive-thru is the fast option.

Drive-Thrus, Bakeries & Easy-Parking Stops

Some mornings you're headed to the dunes or the beach and the coffee just needs to happen on the way. These are the spots where parking is painless or you never leave the car at all.

The Daily Grind coffee drive-thru exterior in Traverse City
The Daily Grind, the cutest little drive-thru in Traverse City, directly behind our Boardman neighborhood townhouses.

The Daily Grind

A small but mighty drive-thru on Eighth Street

Location: 736 E Eighth St

Hours: Check current hours

Order this: Espresso drinks, sourdough breakfast sandwiches, plant-powered Lotus drinks, fresh fruit and other bites.

The vibe: The cutest little drive-thru in town, and it sits directly behind our Boardman neighborhood townhouses. Our guests there can walk out the back door for their morning coffee.

Good to know: If you're staying with us on Boardman, this is your spot. No car required.

Common Good Bakery

Artisan bakery with European boulangerie roots

Location: 1115 E 8th St (full café) or 537 W 14th St (original bakery)

Hours: Daily 6am-3pm. Friday pizza night 4-8pm at the 8th Street location.

Order this: The morning buns (croissant dough cinnamon rolls) or almond croissants. Their French Peasant Bread is worth buying for your rental kitchen.

The vibe: Warm, busy, smells like baking sourdough. The 8th Street location has full seating, an espresso bar, and even mimosas and bloody marys.

Good to know: Opens at 6am, one of the earliest options in town. Expect lines on weekends.

Factory Man Roasting House

Newer roastery (opened 2023) in a spacious industrial space

Location: 708 Boon St

Hours: Monday-Friday 7am-3pm, Saturday 8am-3pm, closed Sunday

Order this: Lemon scones, spinach and feta scones, or homemade hot chocolate with marshmallows in winter. Spiced potatoes with garlic aioli if you want something savory.

The vibe: Bright, modern, and chill. A destination spot rather than a walk-by, so you'll want a car, but the easy parking is a major advantage over downtown.

Good to know: Wheelchair accessible, easy parking, and a good escape when the downtown spots are slammed.

The Best Brunch Spots in Traverse City

When the morning IS the plan. Traverse City brunch runs from composed seasonal plates to diner counters that have been slinging omelets since 1975, and there's a right answer for every kind of group.

Hours: Monday/Wednesday-Friday 8am-3pm, Saturday-Sunday 9am-3pm (closed Tuesdays)

Order this: The various eggs Benedict options, the Monte Cristo, or house-made cinnamon rolls. Strong cocktail program; the Paloma is excellent.

The vibe: Historic high ceilings and exposed brick in the old State Hospital, but cheerful and bright. Feels special without being fussy, and pairs perfectly with shopping in the Mercato.

Good to know: Reservations recommended and available online. Expect 30-minute weekend waits; browse the Village shops while you're on the list.

$-$$

New (opened late 2025) from the Red Spire owners

Location: 115 E Front St, downtown

Hours: Daily 8am-3pm

Order this: Omelets, benedicts, and a full bar for boozy brunch: mimosas, bloody marys, breakfast cocktails.

The vibe: Bright, lively, designed to be a downtown anchor. It carries over the high standards from Red Spire with a more energetic, social feel.

$$

Composed, seasonal breakfast for serious food lovers

Location: 1371 Gray Dr, Suite 300, Grand Traverse Commons (Boiler House area)

The vibe: Industrial-modern with an open kitchen where you can watch the chefs work. Less eggs-and-bacon, more seasonally driven plates.

Good to know: Small space, first-come basis or waitlist. Worth it for a special morning.

The Omelette Shoppe

$

Classic breakfast diner since 1975

Location: 124 S Cass St or 1209 E Front St

Hours: Monday-Friday 7am-2pm, Saturday-Sunday 8am-2pm

Order this: The Farmer's Omelet (14 signature omelets in all), scratch-made cinnamon rolls, locally sourced ingredients throughout.

The vibe: High-volume, energetic, smells like bacon and maple syrup. Loud, friendly, and unpretentious. Expect a weekend wait; they use a texting notification system. No reservations.

Heading Out of Town? Start Here

Most trips up here aren't just Traverse City. Day trips to the dunes, the wineries, and the small towns are half the point, and every direction has coffee worth planning around. We wrote a separate guide for each area so you're never more than one tab away from a good cup:

  • Empire & Glen Arbor (Sleeping Bear Dunes): Leelanau Coffee Roasting Co. has been roasting in Glen Arbor since 1993 and fuels every Dune Climb morning, The Mill is a restored historic gristmill turned café on the Crystal River, and Grocer's Daughter Chocolate in Empire pours drinking chocolate that's basically a melted chocolate bar in a cup.
  • Suttons Bay & Leelanau Wine Country: Hive Coffee Co. in Suttons Bay (honeycomb waffles, strawberry matcha on ice), Pedaling Beans in Lake Leelanau for cyclists and winery-hoppers, Little Boat Coffee by Fishtown in Leland, and New Bohemian Cafe in Northport, open year-round. If you cut through Cedar, Cedar River Coffee Company is a sweet small-town stop for coffee and a light breakfast.
  • Lake Ann & Interlochen: Red Door Coffee House in Lake Ann village is the cozy fireplace-and-couches kind of coffee shop, and it's a short drive from our A-Frame in the woods nearby.
  • Acme & Williamsburg: the east side of the bay, handy if you're staying near East Bay beaches or the Holiday House.

And for the full picture beyond mornings, our Traverse City food & drink guide covers lunch, dinner, breweries, and everything in between.

Stay Steps From Your Morning Coffee

Our Historic Hearth and Spiral Sanctuary condos at Grand Traverse Commons put Higher Grounds, Cuppa Joe, Red Spire, and Sugar 2 Salt within a short walk. Our Boardman neighborhood townhouses, including the TART Trail Townhouse, back right up to The Daily Grind, with Common Good a quick pedal away. And Midtown Square is an easy walk to Front Street, so Mundos, Espresso Bay, and The Dandy are all on foot.

One last thing: we make sure the coffee cupboard is stocked at every one of our homes. So whatever the day holds, you've got fuel before you even find your shoes.
