An Honest Word About "Downtown" Rentals

I'll level with you, because listings in this town often won't. Very few vacation rentals sit on Front Street itself; most lodging in the core is hotels, and plenty of places advertised as "downtown" are actually a drive away. What you actually want, and what most guests tell me they want once we talk it through, is a quiet place you can walk from. Dinner on Front Street, a sunset at the beach, and then a real night's sleep on a street where the loudest thing after 10pm is somebody's porch conversation.

That's what our seven downtown-area homes do. They sit in the residential neighborhoods that ring downtown: Midtown, North Boardman, and the Grand Traverse Commons. Below I'll give you the honest walking time for each one, because "walkable" means nothing without a number attached. For the full lay of the land, my where to stay in Traverse City guide compares every neighborhood we host in.

What Staying Near Downtown Gets You

Traverse City is compact, and downtown is the part you can do entirely on foot. Our downtown neighborhood guide covers the blocks in detail; here's the short version of why guests pick this part of town.

๐Ÿฝ๏ธ

Front Street on foot

Restaurants, breweries, tasting rooms, bookstores, the State Theatre. Park the car once and spend your evenings walking to dinner instead of driving to it. Our full restaurant rundown is in the Traverse City food and drink guide.

๐Ÿ–๏ธ

The bay at the end of the street

Downtown Traverse City sits right on West Grand Traverse Bay. Clinch Park beach and the marina are a few minutes past the Front Street shops, close enough for a swim before your morning coffee.

๐Ÿš—

No parking battles

Summer parking downtown is the one thing every visitor complains about. Staying within walking or biking distance means you arrive on foot while everyone else circles the block.

๐ŸŒ…

Slow mornings, easy logistics

Walk to coffee, wander the farmers market, come back for a nap, walk back out for dinner. When the whole trip runs on foot, nobody has to be the driver.

The Homes: About 10 Minutes on Foot

These five put downtown within a comfortable walk. Each card shows the real distance, not the optimistic version.

Downtown vs. Nearby: How I'd Choose

When a guest emails asking for "something downtown," my first question back is always the same: do you want to be in the noise, or near it? Right-on-Front-Street means hotel rates and Friday-night sound through the windows. A 10 minute walk away means you keep the evenings and lose the noise. Here's how the three options actually differ.

Right in the action: Midtown Square

If the goal is the shortest walk to Front Street, this is our pick. You're about 10 minutes from the shops and restaurants but on a calmer street, so you get downtown evenings without bar noise outside your window.

Walkable with room for a group: the North Boardman townhouses

Four townhouses side by side, each sleeping 6, about a 10 minute walk or a few minutes by bike on the TART Trail to downtown. Each has its own parking, full kitchen, and laundry. Book one for a family or several for a group of up to 24.

Character over proximity: the Commons condos

Historic Hearth and Spiral Sanctuary live inside Building 50 at the Village at Grand Traverse Commons, the restored 1885 State Hospital up the hill from downtown. You trade the 10 minute walk for a 20-25 minute one (or a few minutes by bike), and in exchange you get a neighborhood with its own restaurants, wine bar, bakeries, and 480 acres of trails out the door.

Downtown Traverse City Vacation Rentals: FAQs

Are there vacation rentals right on Front Street in Traverse City?

True Front Street addresses are rare, and most lodging there is hotels. Our seven downtown-area homes sit in the walkable neighborhoods that ring downtown instead: Midtown Square is about a 10 minute walk to Front Street, the four North Boardman townhouses are about a 10 minute walk to downtown, and our two Grand Traverse Commons condos are a 20-25 minute walk or a short bike ride away. You get the same downtown evenings with quieter nights.

Is parking included at your downtown Traverse City rentals?

Parking is easy at all seven homes. Each of the four North Boardman townhouses has its own parking and three of the four include a garage. Midtown Square uses street parking on its quiet residential block. The two Commons condos park in the lots at the Village at Grand Traverse Commons. Either way you can park once and walk or bike downtown instead of hunting for a spot on Front Street.

How far are the rentals from the beach?

Clinch Park beach sits at the foot of downtown on West Grand Traverse Bay. From the North Boardman townhouses it's roughly a 12 minute walk to the bay beaches, and from Midtown Square the beach is a walk of about 15 minutes through downtown. From the Grand Traverse Commons condos plan on a short drive or bike ride to the water.

Can you walk to Front Street from each property?

From Midtown Square and the four North Boardman townhouses, yes: figure about 10 minutes on foot, less by bike on the TART Trail. From Historic Hearth and Spiral Sanctuary at the Grand Traverse Commons, the walk downtown takes 20-25 minutes; most guests bike it in a few minutes or drive it in about 5.

Are the rentals quiet at night?

Yes. None of our homes sit above the Front Street bars. Midtown Square and the townhouses are on residential streets a short walk from the action, and the Commons goes notably quiet after dark even in peak summer.
